01 / Practical experience

What I can do on a farm right now

A straight look at where I can work independently, and where I still need guidance.

Independent

Greenhouse & garden production

Full-cycle growing, from seedlings to harvest. Organic living soil preferred; also hydroponics and aquaponics.

Independent

Plant care & growing environments

Propagation, pruning and pest control (IPM). Climate monitoring, irrigation and basic automation.

Introductory experience

Day-to-day cattle care

Herding and moving cattle, feeding, watering, hand-milking and health observations. I’ve done these tasks, but my hours on a full cattle farm are limited.

Needs guidance

Machinery: learning on the job

Supervised experience on tractor, Bobcat, TLB and excavator. Keen to build hours under guidance.

Independent

Vehicles & trailers

Extensive bakkie (pickup truck) experience on and off road. Confident coupling, reversing and manoeuvring single- and double-axle trailers. Code EB licence (light vehicle with heavy trailer).

Practical field experience

Water & erosion control

Reading terrain and water movement, farm-venue mapping and layout, and rerouting water on trails to help reduce erosion.

02 / How I work

I follow the farmer’s lead.

You know your farm best. My job is to support your plan, work the way you want things done, and keep the day’s work moving.

Work with nature. Keep it practical.

Support, don’t take over

I’m there to support the farmer, not take over the farm’s decisions. I learn how you want things done and do them that way.

Make what’s there work better

Start with the farm’s existing equipment, resources, weather and conditions. Improvements have to work on this farm, with what it already has.

Protect soil and water

Pay attention to soil cover, water movement and erosion. Healthy soil keeps the rest of the farm productive.

03 / Background

Hi, I’m Jonathan.

Gauteng, South Africa

About six years of greenhouse growing contracts, and plenty of time working on farm venues.

My plant work covers the full growing cycle, with organic living soil as my preferred approach. My event work has taken me across farm terrain: mapping and planning more than 100 events, working on layouts, moving equipment and managing water on trails.

My Human Movement Science studies and CSCS training mean I understand hard physical work and how to sustain it. Comfortable with early starts, long days, repetitive tasks and working in heat and cold.

04 / Questions

Questions farmers ask

When can you start?

In Gauteng, from December 2026. For seasonal work in the U.S. through the H-2A program, from April 2027.

Which areas do you cover in South Africa?

Gauteng and the surrounding provinces.

How does hiring through H-2A work?

The U.S. farm or its agent applies for H-2A certification and files the petition. Once that is approved, I apply for the visa. If you are a U.S. farm planning for the 2027 season, email me and we can talk about dates.

What can you do without supervision?

Greenhouse and garden production, plant care, and driving a bakkie with single- or double-axle trailers. I do cattle work and larger machinery with guidance while I build hours.

What licence do you have?

A South African Code EB licence, which covers a light vehicle towing a heavy trailer.

Can I speak to your references?

Yes. References are available on request. Email me and I will send their contact details.
